The Advantages and Disadvantages of Owning a Dachshund

Dachshunds are wonderfully loving and comical dogs,and like most breeds, if properly socialized, will make great companions for the entire family. The Dachshund will always be a loyal partner. In spite of this, there are certain problems within every breed that might make ownership a challenge. Note the advantages and disadvantages so that an informed decision can be made as to whether the Dachshund is right for you.

One of the differences in this particular breed is the way in which the temperament varies based on coat type: The smooth is alert, bold and friendly; Long-haired, reserved, timid, and requires patience; Wire-haired, active, friendly and stubborn.

• Cuddly (napping in owner's lap and in human's bed)

• Good with children and other pets (if properly socialized).
  
• Low maintenance - Does not require much exercise. The smooths need little grooming but may need a sweater for cold winter days. The longhair needs brushing to prevent mats from forming, especially at the elbows and around the ears. The wirehair does not need a sweater but his coat does require some brushing, especially if it is soft. Mats and tangles must be eliminated from the coat before bathing.

• Stubborn
  
• Excessive jumping and climbing of stairs must be curtailed (due to their susceptibility to disk disease - see below)
  
• Weight must be closely monitored (so as to possibly prevent disk disease - see below)
  
• Training difficulty - (being a strong-minded breed, the Dachshund can be more of a challenge to train). However, with consistent and rewarding training they can learn quite easily.
  Possible genetic problems:
  
• Intervertebral Disc Disease
  
• Cushings Disease
  
• Thyroid
  
• Epilepsy
  
• Eye and hearing abnormalities (associated disorders connected with the dapple, or merle, a coat pattern known in other breeds)
  
• Urinary tract stones

  If not socialized and trained properly, the Dachshund (like most other breeds) can become -
  

• Overly protective
  
• Potentially bad around adults, children and other pets
  
• A fear biter
  
• A barker
