According to the 2006 census, English and French are the preferred language. Sixty Seven percent of the population speaks English at home. English and French are recognized by the Constitution of Canada "official languages," which means that all laws of the federal government are in both English and French and that federal government services are required to be available in both languages. The five most un-official languages are Chinese, which is reportedly spoken in just over two percent of Canada. Punjabi, Spanish, Italian, and Arabic are all spoken in less than one percent of Canada. Over the last two decades, families in Canada have become more diverse because of increases in separation, divorce, remarriage, lone parent families and common-law unions. Today in Canada, the children have less brothers and sisters than there parents had. Most children in Canada today are an only child or only have one brother or sister. In the mid 1900's 20% of the children in Canada lived with at least five brothers or sisters. In 1991 it dropped to only 1%. In Canada, 43% of families with children at home had one child, 18% of the 5.3 million families with children at home had two children and 39% had three or more children. Also the children in Canada toady have parents that are older. 14% of live births to first time mothers was in 1983 when mothers were in their thirties and older. This percentage increased to 32% in 1999. It's almost the same story with fathers too. 32% of men were fathers to baby's born to first time mothers in 1983 and 51% in 1999. Housing People stay in condos. There are really fancy homes. Live in neighborhoods or an apartment buildings. The houses are close together. The houses are mostly like they are here. Everyone has a porch or balcony. There are lots of big driveways. Food People eat lots of snacks and junk food. There is lots of peanut free food. People eat exotic foods. There are lots of strange meat (skunk, beaver, rabbit, rodents). The food there is a mix of British and French foods. There are many unusual vegetables. People eat lots of pie. Canada is famous for their hockey team, Team Canada. Team Canada wins a lot of gold medals in the Olympics. Whenever the Montreal Canadians win the Stanley Cup, there are riots in the streets of Canada. Canada has many hockey teams including, The Toronto Maple Leafs, The Montreal Canadians, Edmonton Oilers, the Vancouver Canucks, Ottawa Senators, and The Calgary Flames. Canada is also famous for their lacrosse. Canada has their own football league that consists of 8 teams including the, Calgary Stampeders, the Edmonton Eskimos, the BC Lions, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Hamilton Tiger Cats, the Montreal Aliouttes, and the Toronto Argonauts. Some of the differences between American football and Canadian football are that the Canadian football size is bigger than the American ball, the end zone is deeper , the field goal posts are in the front of the end zone instead of the back, and there are 12 players on the Canadian team instead of 11 on the American team. Curling is another popular sport in Canada. Curling consists of 3 people, one person pushing the “rock” and 2 people sweeping the ice in front of the “rock” to control the direction. The purpose of curling is to get the most rocks closest to the center circle. Curling is a combination of bowling and pool. Canada also has two major league baseball teams, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Montreal Expos. The Blue Jays won the World Series two years in a row, in 1992 and 1993 (Way 1)., Canada can be broken down into the following categories Religion Canada Religion There is no official religion in Canada. But there are two religions that dominate the population in Canada; the Roman Catholic Church, and the Protestant Church. Sixteen percent of the Canadian population is non religious. There are many traditions and rituals in Canada. Marriage is a huge milestone in all religions; most men marry between the ages of 25 and 29, while most women marry between the ages of 20 and 25. In the 1800's, marriage was considered a religious ritual. The Catholic and Protestant followers in Canada believe that marriage is intended for a lifetime. Funerals in Canada are most of the time prearranged. Canada's laws restrict a person to be donated to research, even if they wanted themselves to, if the majority of the family wants them buried. Canada wants its people to be laid to rest in the way their religion wants them to. There was a big controversy over the word “God” in the Canadian Constitution and the Canadian National Anthem. About 36,000 non religious people in Canada signed a petition to a parliament member to remove the word from those two things, but the petition was ignored. The French version of “O Canada” has a part which talks about carrying a cross, which many non religious people fought on. But the part is still in there In some parts of the country, Sunday shopping is banned. Some people in Canada are very religious while others are strictly against religion., Canada can be broken down into the following categories Government Canada became a confederation on July the 1st of 1867. Canada has a confederation with a parliamentary democracy. Branches of government: Executive-Queen Elizabeth II (represented by a governor general) prime minister-(head of government), cabinet. Legislative-bicameral parliament(House of Commons has been 301 members, and will be 308 members as of the June 28, 2004 elections, Judicial-Supreme Court, Federal- level political parties: Liberal Party, Bloc Quebecios, New Democracy Party, Conservative Party of Canada. There are ten provinces and 3 territories in Canada. The 1982 Charter of Rights guarantees basic rights for many Canadians. Canada is a monarchy with a federal system. Canada also has strong democratic traditions. Canada's criminal is largely based on British law. Civil law is also based on British law. You serve in the Senate till the age of 75. In the House of Commons, you can only serve for 5 years. There are ten provinces and they all are governed by an elected chamber and a premier that is appointed by the governor. A premier is like a prime minister. The solders sent most of there work back to Britain where they were bought by people who wanted pictures of the colonies. George Heriot was one of the firs artist solders in Canada and he produced a work of prints called Travels Through the Canadas in the year 1807. most of the early works of Canadian art flowed the European styles, Cornelius Krieghoff, a dutch artist in in Quebec, painted art about Canadian farmers in the mid 1800's. Many artists where sent to Canada to make maps and record the land. These pieces of art where valuable because photos had not yet bean invented and all maps had to be made by hand. Having to make maps by hand was a long task and required lots of traveling because the map makers had to see everything that they wished to include on there maps. The first explores of parts had two make crewed maps of where they went, so that people who could spend more time could follow their rough and make beater maps of it. Many people believe that there is little to no Canadian literature from the 1800s. This is not true. People believe this because during this time an uprising about northern and southern Canada ended up in the burning of Parliament. At that time Parliament war where most of the writings had bean stored and burning it down destroyed most o the writing from that time. It was also during the lower Canada rebellion that a type of writing called French Canadian fiction was turning up from place to place. This form of writing was mostly to be blamed on the modern system of primary school education that had started and the rebellion that was going under way then. It was not until WWII that French Canadian literature was becoming wide spread and industrialized. Their main exports are to the US, UK, and Japan. Canada is $467.3 billion in debt and their revenues are $565.8 billion. Canada uses 25% of the United States' exports, and the United States buys about 85% of Canada's exports. Canada and the U.S. Signed a trade agreement in 1988. The FTA produced tariffs on imported goods. Canada has a large agriculture products. Canada produces wheats and grains. The export to the United States, Europe, and East Asia.
