Total Quality Mentoring (TQM)

How do you visualize the type of

tutor/mentor program needed to help
kids in high poverty neighborhoods
move through school and into jobs and
careers…with the help of volunteers
who come into their lives via organized
tutoring, mentoring and learning
programs?

What does Total Quality Mentoring

mean?

Total Quality Mentoring
In the 1990s we begin to use this
term to represent something more
than community based mentoring.

Connecting youth in high poverty areas with adults from many different
background is a strategy for expanding social capital, or “who you know”.

This is the
goal of a TQM
program.

I led such a
program for 36
years in
Chicago.

TOTAL QUALITY MENTORING –
The potential of out-of-school time Tutor/Mentor Programs

In a TQM Program…
Everyone is engaged in “learning” in order to
constantly improve the impact a program has on
its participants…youth, volunteers, staff,
community.

For good programs to exist and grow, the community (business, hospitals,
volunteers, etc.) must provide on-going support.

For good programs to exist

and grow, we must find new
ways to influence the flow of
resources, directly to EVERY
youth serving program in
EVERY high poverty
neighborhood.

The TQM chart can be drawn in many ways. Using network analysis
programs ought to be able to show the diversity of volunteers, who come
from different industries, colleges, faith groups, etc.

Each spoke in the TQM chart represents a “service learning” loop

As volunteers connect
with youth in an
organized
tutor/mentor program,
they learn about
poverty, and the
needs of the
organization. They
take that knowledge
back to their
workplace, faith
group, family, etc. and
recruit others to help.
